Ms. Funke Shonekan
Funke Shonekan (Hospitality Secretary) is the Executive Director of The Chris Ogunbanjo Foundation; a Non-Governmental Organization set up with two centres:
- The Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution
- The Centre for the Promotion of Industrial Society and Private Enterprise
She is also the founder of Young Adult Professionals and Entrepreneurs (YAP&E), a professional networking platform that is focused on linking upwardly mobile professionals and entrepreneurs from all industries through social Networking, Exhibitions, Workshops and Seminars (N.E.W.S). Funke’s keen interest in travel and love for international cuisine propelled her to study International Hospitality & Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, England from which she holds a BSc. Degree. It was whilst managing the executive floor at the Ritz Carlton Hotel (Downtown Atlanta, USA) as the front desk and assistant concierge agent, that Funke’s passion for connecting and developing people was fully realized as she thoroughly enjoyed the various encounters and people she was exposed to.
Her transitional years upon returning home to Nigeria in 2003 were spent accumulating a great deal of experience in Management and Marketing, with work experiences from W Hospitality Group, Viacom International Media Networks (MTV BASE, AFRICA) and Delta Airlines respectively.
As the Events/Marketing Specialist at MTV, Funke mastered the art of professional Event Planning, Budget and Project Management and working at Delta Airlines further developed her competence in organizing international, world class events.During a brief hiatus in 2011, Funke resolved to apply her theoretical studies to her daily lifestyle by working strictly in the hospitality industry related to enterprises.In 2013, she launched FunKey Events; an Event Marketing and Management Company that delivers world class turnkey event solutions with its range of bespoke services. Her pioneering spirit identified how the lack of skills and poor attitude of staff could cripple the hospitality industry in Nigeria. In response to this, she enrolled for a course to become a certified trainer in International Social Etiquette and Customer Service Training. Further down, Funke’s desire to see excellent service displayed in the hospitality indus try through quality service, rekindled her ambition to train staff and equip them to be established in the service industry. Consequently, the FunKey Events Training Academy (FETA) was established in 2017 to train and equip waiting staff in the hospitality industry, to provide quality service.
Being a Social Reformer with the core aim of serving people, Funke’s passion for Impact Investment and Social Entrepreneurship was identified by global organizations, and in June 2017, she was appointed the Nigeria Outreach Ambassador for Nexus Global. In February 2018, she became the Co-Chair Regional Director for NEXUS Africa. Nexus is a global community of young social entrepreneurs, impact investors, philanthropists and activists who have come together to use their knowledge, passion, resources and connections for the greater good of their societies.
Through her personal development and wealth of experiences, Funke’s passion for people, service, and social enterprise has developed her proactive approach as she has been able to lead by example and has built a character of influence in the Hospitality Industry in Nigeria and the Global World.
