The Skills Acquisition Centre was set up in 1999 by Dame Marie Fatayi-Williams as a centre to rehabilitate the children under the bridge, positioning them for gainful employment. Today the centre plays its own part albeit a small one in combating the issue of unemployment. The centre has created empowerment opportunities aimed at promoting self-reliance, employment creation and poverty alleviation among female youths and women in the community. It has been a lifeline for those who have been marginalized by society because of little to no formal education; we have watched women who because of their age thought they were confined to a certain future experience a radical shift because of the skills acquired at the Centre. Many of our students are adults who want a quicker, more reliable pathway into a promising career so that they have an opportunity to improve their lives and those that depend on them as soon as possible.
The Centre is domiciled in Lekki serving students who live and work along the Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Epe axis. It has five departments on vocational skills: Adult Literacy, Computer Literacy, Hair Dressing and Salon Services, Sewing and Fashion Design, and Catering and Events Management.
We have proudly graduated and equipped over 1,500 students for the future and indirectly impacted 27,00o people. Evidence of our impact in Lagos state is growing number of students who attend each year (over 120 students per year) and the strength of partnerships with traditional rulers, Barclays’s Bank, ExxonMobil and Eko Atlantic, who have supported the Centre by sponsoring a number of students annually.
